15 nautical miles

When I woke up the boys were already doing schoolwork, so I started my work too. We pulled anchor around 8:30 am, after a "fight" with the anchor when it got stuck in the mud.

About an hour later we came to an absolutely crazy bridge (or really set of bridges). A fast current was racing through the channel and lights hung down from a 66ft bridge where we would only have a foot of room to spare. Plus, it was mean high tide. This would've been bad enough without the 2 lift bridges right afterward! 4 bridge sections needed to open (2 per bridge), but only 3 of them would open. This meant that, on the last bridge with only 1 side open, we had to fit through an incredibly small gap without hitting our mast or shrouds on the opened section of the bridge. We somehow made it through without hitting (there's a picture of what it looked like!). Right after this, we had to dock and wait for the tide to go down so we could make it under the next fixed bridge. An hour later, we squeezed under the bridge and were underway once again.

By 3:30 pm we were anchored in Wassaw Sound. Fun fact: sailing for the 1996 Olympics was held here. In the distance, we could just barely make out the huge floating campus that was built to host the regatta. A pack of dolphins swam around the boat for a while. We ran around the deck following them for about 15 minutes! Unfortunately, Clarke wasn't feeling too good and spent most of his time hanging over the rail. Around 4:30 pm we explored a remote beach right next to our anchorage.

When we got back to the boat from the beach we set up the rope swing. It was a little bit cold but still fun! The water was glassy and the gorgeous sky reflected off the water, bathing everything in a golden light. It was beautiful!

Around 7 pm we ate dinner and watched the FBYC annual award ceremony, which was hosted online this year because of COVID. Clarke, Cyrus, and I all got awards! I got one for top top-placing girl in my class, Clarke got one for the best first-year sailor, and Cyrus got one for the most promising sailor. Afterward, we ate ice cream and went to bed.
