30 nautical miles

We were planning on going to the Berry Islands when we left West End. There were about 25 knots of wind from a good direction, so we figured it was the perfect day to go a longer distance. But when we left the inlet the waves were huge! There were 8ft rollers from the west.

We had both a full main and partial jib, so we were moving. When I was at the helm I had to use all my arm strength to keep the boat on the correct heading! More waves started building from a different direction so my dad made the decision to bail to Lucya, a town about 10 miles south of Freeport.

Soon some merchants came into view. They were docked at piers a little way offshore. My dad had a good idea to go in the lee of the ships and get our mainsail down. The take-down was much easier than it would have somewhere else. We rolled out the full jib and kept going. It was a lot easier going with the main down.

By lunchtime, we were pulling into Lucaya. We found a very protected harbour to anchor in. There was a nice couple anchored right next to us that my dad yell-chatted with. Clarke and Cyrus started to rig the rope swing. We jumped off a few times before going snorkelling. Then we washed off and read till dinner.
